About the position

The Programs Associate is a one-year position designed for an early-career professional who wants to gain hands-on experience in philanthropy and democracy.

Working within the Programs team and reporting to the Director of Programs, this person contributes to the grantmaking process while developing research, analytical, relationship-building, and project management skills. The Programs Associate is exposed to a wide range of organizations working to strengthen democracy and will gain experience in strategic philanthropy, due diligence, and organizational learning

Key Responsibilities

 

Grantmaking & Due Diligence 

  • Support the review of grant applications

  • Prepare summaries and research memos for the Programs team

  • Assist in drafting grant recommendations

  • Review grantee reports and summarize key learnings

  • Support communications with applicants and grantees throughout the grantmaking process.
     

Continuous Improvement & Documentation

  • Maintain accurate grant records and documentation within the Foundation's grant management system

  • Identify opportunities to improve grantmaking tools, workflows, and internal processes, and make recommendations to the Programs and Operations teams

  • Support the Foundation's efforts to strengthen organizational learning and knowledge management

Strategic Projects 

  • Conduct research on organizations, emerging issues and trends relevant to the Foundation's priorities

  • Support evaluation of the Foundation’s impact 

  • Assist in planning for convenings and other Foundation initiatives

  • Undertake special projects aligned with the Foundation's strategic priorities

Decision-Making Authority

Working under the supervision of the Director of Programs, the Programs Associate:

  • Exercises judgment in conducting research and preparing analyses

  • Provides recommendations and insights to support grantmaking decisions

  • Does not independently make funding decisions or represent the Foundation on strategic matters

Qualifications
  • Recent undergraduate or graduate degree in public policy, political science, law, sociology, public administration, nonprofit management, international development, or another relevant field

  • Demonstrated interest in democracy, civil society, philanthropy, public policy or human rights

  • Strong research and analytical skills

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Highly organized with strong attention to detail

  • Comfortable managing multiple projects simultaneously

  • Fully bilingual in English and French, with strong written and oral communication skills in both languages

Working Conditions​​​
 

Target Start Date :

  • September 8, 2026


Location : 

  • This position is based in Montreal and follows the Foundation's hybrid work model, with typical presence in the office approximately 2-3 days per  week.

 

Type of contract : 

  • This is a full-time, one-year position.

 

Work schedule : 

  • Regular work schedule of 35 hours per week, typically Monday to Friday, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

 

Travel : 

  • Occasional evening work and travel may be required to attend meetings, conferences and Foundation events.

 

Salary :

  • The salary range for this position is between $72,000 and $82,000 based on experience.

Please note: Only candidates who are legally authorized to work in Canada will be considered.

Hiring Process

 

The hiring committee will review applications and may invite selected candidates to participate in a brief screening call for an initial conversation and to assess oral proficiency in English and/or French.

Interviews will be held in person.

  • Candidates invited to an interview will receive a $100 honorarium in recognition of their time and contribution.

  • We will make every effort to accommodate candidates with pre-planned travel or vacation commitments.

If necessary, selected candidates may be invited to a second interview.

We will extend an offer of employment to the successful candidate, who will be given time to review and respond to the offer.
