Montréal, Québec — The Euphrosine Foundation officially launches to support charities dedicated to strengthening democracy and advancing human rights in Canada.
Founded by Claire Trottier—a scientist, philanthropist, and long-time advocate for policy in the public interest—the Euphrosine Foundation begins with an initial endowment of $60 million. It is being structured as a time-bound foundation, with a planned 30-year lifespan to ensure that the Foundation has a meaningful impact within a single generation.
“As we face converging crises, we believe philanthropy should move resources quickly and with purpose,” said Claire Trottier, Chair of the Board of Directors. “We’ve chosen a time-limited model to prioritize redistribution over perpetuity.”
The Foundation’s first commitment is to allocate $6-million dollars—10% of its endowment—to community-led re-grantors already identified during its planning phase. These initial capital transfers reflect the belief that communities know what they need to thrive and flourish.
The Board of Directors has appointed Niamh Leonard as the Foundation’s Executive Director. Niamh is a lawyer with over a decade’s experience in the non-profit and philanthropic sectors.
“Democracy means that government is for the people, by the people,” said Niamh Leonard. “Civil society plays a key role in realizing that principle—by ensuring that diverse voices are heard, and institutions remain accountable to the public. We’re committed to supporting organizations working to strengthen these foundations of democratic life.”
The Foundation’s name, Euphrosine, refers to the Greek goddess of joy. It reflects a clear conviction: democracy is not only a system of governance—it is a collective project. When people have a real say in the decisions that shape their lives, it creates the conditions for joyful, thriving communities.
