Our Name

The foundation is named in honour of Claire Trottier’s maternal lineage. One of Claire's ancestors who lived seven generations ago was named Euphrosine Perras.

The name Euphrosine is meaningful: in Greek mythology, Euphrosine was the goddess of joy. Her and her sisters Thalia and Aglaea were collectively referred to as the “three charities”.

Euphrosine's spirit guides our approach: we believe that in the face of converging crises, collective action fuelled by hope and solidarity is essential to building a joyous future for all.

Grants

We are in the process of developing our theory of change and corresponding approach to grants.

As a first step in our philanthropy, we are transferring 10% of our endowment, which amounts to $6 million, to already-identified community-led regrantors. These capital transfers reflect our belief that communities know what they need in order to thrive and flourish.

We will update the website once we are ready to receive granting applications.

The Euphrosine Foundation is situated on the traditional territory of the Kanien’kehá:ka Nation—land that was occupied without cession or conquest. We believe that any effort to strengthen democracy in Canada must begin by confronting this truth and advancing Indigenous self-determination.
